The USAID Low Emissions Asian Development (USAID LEAD) program launched the Hotel Energy Efficiency Initiative in Chiang Mai, Thailand on March 13. A collaboration between USAID LEAD and the Chiang Mai Municipality, it improves energy efficiency in Thailand’s hospitality sector and helps develop and promote the deployment of greenhouse gas protocols and tools throughout the region, enabling greenhouse gas reduction and furthering green growth.

The Thai Hotel Association, Chiang Mai Chamber of Commerce and Chiang Mai University’s Energy Research and Development Institute will support the initiative, working together with USAID LEAD to analyze hotels’ energy use, develop an energy benchmark and encourage hotels to improve efficiency. The Hotel Energy Efficiency Initiative aims to become a regional model for how hotels in one city can work together effectively to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
